About Stories from Tagore by Rabindranath Tagore
This collection contains some of the best stories of Tagore who put India on the literary map of the world. Translated from Bengali to English, these stories depict the human condition in its many forms innocence and childhood, love and loss, the city and the village, the natural and the supernatural. Prominent among the stories are the famous The Cabuliwallah, which has also been adapted as a movie. The book also gives an insight into the socio-economic conditions prevalent in Colonial Bengal. The language is rich and the narrative compelling. Tagore was one of the greatest poets of the twentieth Century, and that lyrical quality comes through in all of his work. About Rabindra Nath Tagore Rabindranath Tagore, also written Ravīndranātha Thākura (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941), sobriquet Gurudev,[c] was a Bengali polymath who reshaped Bengali literature and music, as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Author of Gitanjali and its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse", he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. In translation his poetry was viewed as spiritual and mercurial; however, his "elegant prose and magical poetry" remain largely unknown outside Bengal. Tagore introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit. He was highly influential in introducing the best of Indian culture to the West and vice versa, and he is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of the modern Indian subcontinent.Stories from Tagore By Rabindranath Tagore Illustrated Rabindranath Tagore 9781520852447 Books
The stories are a quick read, like that about short stories but the illustrations are sad, very bad print and rarely cohesive with the story. Also there are some references to numbers within the story that do not correlate to any information which is strange. At the end the stories are nonetheless a wonderful read.Product details

Stories from Tagore By Rabindranath Tagore Illustrated Rabindranath Tagore 9781520852447 Books Reviews
Simple and quick read. Short stories from old India gives one a window on how life may have been back then, historical culture and values. Helps one to better understand today's India. Author was the first non-European Nobel Laureate, and this is one of his earlier works.
Free access to a very great writer poet, short story author, marvelous historian. I especially appreciate his childhood reminisce and another free book "Sadana"
Tagore was a genius poet and thinker, and, as far as I know, this is the most complete collection of his works.
I have the kindle version. It is well structured, although I would prefer it if each poem started on a new page.
Simple and elegant stories of Tagore brought me the sweet memories of my School time English classes.
This is just a perfect collection one could have. I loved the story of "Subha" of all the ten.
I liked the sad little stories but each one ended with a word study - obvious for a classroom. I'm impressed with anything from India, so I may be prejudiced. The content of each story is simple and sometimes sweet, but almost always sad. If you like that sort of thing.....
Thanks to for making this translation available for free. This is a review of the quality of the translation - not the literary merit, or otherwise, of the original Bengali language book. Generally the translators did a good job except for a few typos and occasions when they took liberties with some of the names.
I got this book to introduce my 12y. old daughter to the works of Rabindranath Tagore (Thakur as he should be known). This collection of short stories serves that purpose reasonably well.
This volume provides us with a handful of Tagore's stories, all of which brim with pathos, humor, and humanity. Taken together, this collection reminds us our frailties and strengths do not lie in opposition, so much as they provide us with the dimension and strength to grow.
The stories are a quick read, like that about short stories but the illustrations are sad, very bad print and rarely cohesive with the story. Also there are some references to numbers within the story that do not correlate to any information which is strange. At the end the stories are nonetheless a wonderful read.
